BCCI: Rohit Sharma to lead India to T20 World Cup win

Jay Shah of BCCI: Rohit Sharma to lead India to T20 World Cup win in 2024. At the unveiling of the Niranjan Shah Stadium ahead of the Rajkot Test between India and England on February 14, Wednesday. BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit Sharma will captain India at the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 and expressed confidence in the team’s victory under his leadership in Barbados.

Jay Shah stated,

“Although we lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, we won hearts by securing victory in 10 consecutive matches. I firmly believe that India, under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, will clinch the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados.”

After India’s exit in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2022 against England, Rohit had not participated in a T20I match until the series against Afghanistan. Despite initial setbacks with two ducks in the first two matches, Rohit made a dazzling comeback. He smashed his 5th T20I hundred in the thrilling series finale in Bengaluru.

During Rohit’s absence from the T20I side. Hardik Pandya took charge as the leader of the Indian team in the shortest format. He also assumed captaincy for the Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2024 campaign.

This led to speculation that Hardik might lead India in the upcoming World Cup in West Indies and the USA, given his experience of leading the team in 11 matches. Suryakumar Yadav has also captained in 8 matches.

However, Hardik has been sidelined due to injury since the ODI World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh in Pune.

Rohit displayed commendable leadership in the ODI World Cup 2023. By guiding India to the final with unbeaten performances in all round-robin matches. His aggressive batting, particularly during the powerplay overs, set the tone for India.

Finishing as the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer with 597 runs, Rohit’s leadership was instrumental in India’s journey to the final, despite falling short against Australia, much to the disappointment of the fans.
