Union Minister ‘guarantees’ CAA rollout nationwide within 7 days

Union Minister Shantanu Thakur asserted that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) will be enforced throughout India within the upcoming seven days. “I assure you that within the next seven days, the implementation of CAA will extend beyond West Bengal to encompass the entire nation,” Thakur stated in Bengali during his address to a public assembly in Kakdwip, South 24 Parganas, Bengal.

Shantanu Thakur also criticized the Trinamool Congress government in Bengal, led by party supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The BJP leader questioned the government’s assertion that having a voter and Aadhaar card qualifies one as a citizen eligible to vote. “If that’s the case, why am I hearing about thousands being denied their voting rights here? The Chief Minister needs to explain this deprivation,” remarked the BJP leader.

Now, Mamata Banerjee has responded to Shantanu Thakur’s comments, accusing the BJP of seeking votes through intimidation. “Their (BJP’s) cries about CAA are purely political. We have granted citizenship to all, and residents of border areas are receiving all benefits. They are citizens, which is why they have voting rights,” stated the West Bengal Chief Minister during her speech in Cooch Behar.

She cautioned residents of border areas against accepting the “identity cards” offered by the BJP, alluding to the CAA. “Reject the counterfeit cards. Let them know we possess a voter ID card and an Aadhaar card. Accepting it may subject you to inclusion in the NRC (National Register of Citizens),” Mamata Banerjee advised during her speech in Cooch Behar.

Trinamool Congress spokesperson Shashi Panja criticized Shantanu Thakur’s remarks, affirming the state’s stance against CAA implementation. “Thakur should reconsider his confidence in CAA; it won’t happen. BJP misleads before elections,” Panja stated to Aaj Tak.

Panja emphasized Mamata Banerjee’s stance that CAA isn’t needed in Bengal as residents are already Indian citizens. “Even BJP doesn’t highlight CAA. Thakur knows it’s wrong,” she remarked.

Shantanu Thakur, BJP’s Lok Sabha MP from Bengal’s Bangaon, echoed Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on CAA.
