In June this year, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh was to go to Canada for three days.The program also included the laying of the foundation of Khalsa College.Some groups opposed the visit of the Jathedar to Malik’s function.He threatened to gherao the venue.After that the tour was cancelled.
Later, in a TV talk show, Malik called anti-India elements the enemy of Sikhs.”These people have worked on behalf of foreign governments,” he said.A Calgary-based journalist said, “Malik was not in favor of certain organizations in Canada and has been in the news for inciting them on various occasions.”Malik had also recently courted controversy for being associated with the printing of the Guru Granth Sahib outside India in violation of religious orders.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police has yet to make an official statement on the killing.Police say the investigation is in the preliminary stages and are still looking for the suspect.
